MALANJE LEADS CORN PRODUCTION IN THE COUNTRY
The province of Malanje is currently considered the corn capital of the country, as a result of the investment made in large farms that boosted the production of the cereal.
The statement was made by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, António de Assis, who was speaking at the opening of the corn harvesting campaign at the Quizenga Lutete Farm, in the municipality of Cacuso.
António de Assis pointed out the province of Huambo as the largest producer of corn in the family sector, figures that are below Malanje taking into account the difference in investments between the two sectors.
Overall, according to the official, current corn production in the country is around 4 million and 500 thousand tons/year, a number considered insufficient given the country’s needs of 10 million tons/year.
He said that everything has been done to reach this figure year after year, which means that it could reach six million tons this season.
On the other hand, he highlighted the steps that Malanje has been taking in rice production in the Songo region, especially in the municipality of Luquembo, where soybeans are also currently being cultivated on an experimental basis.
